VR support in Squadron 42 is unconfirmed. No official source states that the game will — or will not — support virtual reality at launch. Here is exactly what is known, what is history, and what to watch. Last verified: 2026-10-12.

The current facts

  • The Steam store page carries no "VR Support" classification. Steam tags games that support VR headsets explicitly; Squadron 42's page does not.
  • The minimum requirements list no VR headset and no VR-specific hardware.
  • Official descriptions of the game — store copy, the RSI page, trailers — never mention VR.
  • CIG has made no statement about VR in Squadron 42's launch feature set.

So the honest answer to "does Squadron 42 support VR?" is: nobody outside CIG knows yet, and CIG has not said. Pages claiming either "yes, it's confirmed" or "no, it's dead" are going beyond the record.

The long history of the VR promise

VR has been part of the project's story since the beginning, which is why the question persists:

  • 2012 — the promise. The original crowdfunding campaign backed Oculus Rift. The Kickstarter page said CIG would support it in Star Citizen and Squadron 42 ("who doesn't want to sit in their cockpit...?"), and Oculus support for the hangar module was a $12M stretch goal.
  • 2014 — a first implementation, then removal. A hangar-module VR mode shipped in patch 11.1 in early 2014. As the code evolved it broke, and rather than maintain it, CIG removed it and redirected the engineering time.
  • 2015 — interest, deprioritized. Chris Roberts said engine-level VR work was "complicated" after CIG's heavy engine changes and that the focus was performance.
  • 2020–2021 — an engineer's assessment. Engine programmer Silvan Hau described VR as feasible in stages (hangar viewing, cockpit use first) but a "whole different story" for a full implementation like Half-Life: Alyx — with higher priorities (Vulkan, optimizations, Gen12 rendering) ahead of it.
  • 2024 — reconfirmed as a direction. At CitizenCon 2024, Roberts reconfirmed that VR is to be supported — a statement about CIG's long-term direction, not a Squadron 42 launch feature.

What this means for headset owners

If you own a VR headset and hoping to fly the campaign in it: there is no confirmation for launch, and the current store listing does not advertise VR support. The realistic reading of the record is that VR remains a long-term CIG ambition, with no announced shipping vehicle. Watch the Steam page — a "VR Support" tag appearing there would be the first concrete signal.

Community workarounds (VorpX, OpenXR wrappers) exist for Star Citizen and are sometimes discussed for Squadron 42; those are unofficial third-party tools, not supported features, and we do not recommend buying anything on the expectation they will work.
