Squadron 42 has been delayed multiple times across its development — that is a matter of public record, documented in official communications. This page lays out every shift with dates and sources, including the most recent move to Q2 2027, so you can judge the project's trajectory from facts rather than forum noise.

The current delay: 2026 → Q2 2027

The game's most recent shift was announced on August 31, 2026. The plan had been to release in Q4 2026 around the Intergalactic Aerospace Expo — a target set at CitizenCon 2024. In the Letter from the Chairman, Chris Roberts explained the move:

"At CitizenCon 2024, we announced we would ship in 2026. Our plan was to release in Q4 around IAE... there is no way I want to launch my spiritual successor to Wing Commander... into the attention buzz saw of Rockstar Games' own Q4 release of their much-anticipated title, Grand Theft Auto VI."

GTA VI dominated late-2026 media coverage even where it did not launch on PC, and CIG judged that any other release in that quarter would be drowned out. Media coverage of the announcement (IGN, PC Gamer, Eurogamer) consistently reported the GTA VI rationale as the stated reason.

The complete shift history

  • 2012–2014. Early crowdfunding materials pointed at a 2014 release. The final stretch goal was reached in November 2014; the date slipped past it.
  • 2015–2016. The "Answer the Call" site teased 2016. At CitizenCon 2016, Roberts confirmed a delay, with the scope grown to 28 chapters (60+ missions).
  • 2017–2019. No published date. CIG released the one-hour Vertical Slice demo in December 2017 and visual teasers in 2018 and 2019.
  • December 2020. Roberts announced CIG would stop discussing release dates entirely until the game was close: "it is too early to discuss release or finish dates."
  • October 2023. Squadron 42 declared feature complete at CitizenCon — a development milestone, not a release date.
  • October 2024. CitizenCon 2954 showed the first public gameplay and set the target at 2026, reaffirmed in CIG's 2024 financial report and the 2025–2026 holiday newsletters.
  • September 2025. CIG skipped CitizenCon 2025 specifically to protect the schedule. CTO Benoît Beauséjour: "We drew a line in the sand when we said 2026" (via PC Gamer/KitGuru).
  • May 2026. Roberts told interviewers the plan was still the end of 2026 but he "can't 100% guarantee it," pointing at "a certain thing in the industry" — widely understood to mean GTA VI.
  • August 2026. The move to Q2 2027, as detailed above.

How to read the delays

The documented record shows two patterns: targets set before the scope was fixed (2014, 2016), and a target set after feature-complete that moved for a stated external reason (2026 → 2027). What has never existed is a confirmed launch day that was subsequently missed — the current plan remains a quarter window. Chris Roberts said in May 2026 that the project was "in the closing stages," and in December 2025 that the game was fully playable start to finish.
