Everything known about Squadron 42 gameplay comes from official footage — chiefly the 76-minute prologue demo shown at CitizenCon 2954 (October 19, 2024) and the official trailers. No one outside CIG and a handful of invited creators has played it. This page separates what has been shown from what has only been said. Verified: 2026-10-12.
Watch the official gameplay
The primary source is the official upload: Squadron 42 CitizenCon 2954 Live Gameplay Reveal. It shows the game's prologue start to finish — this is the "demo" people mean when they talk about Squadron 42 gameplay (see our demo guide for why there is no playable one).
What the prologue demo shows, segment by segment
- Ship-board life. The player wakes aboard UEES Gauntlet, a Javelin-class destroyer, during the Battle of Vega II. You walk the ship, talk with crew including Captain Rachel MacLaren, and the demo shows conversation systems, personal quarters, and NPC routines.
- Turret combat. A holographic tutorial teaches gunnery, then live combat against Vanduul ships: switching between heavy cannons and repeaters, targeting key components on the largest enemy vessels, and destroying Cleavers — boarding craft trying to reach your ship.
- Boarding defense (FPS). The Gauntlet gets boarded. On foot, the demo shows crouching, prone, vaulting, stealth past Vanduul soldiers, ballistic weapons, medpen healing, personal scanning, and mobiGlas data transfers — a first-person shooter layer inside the capital ship.
- Ship engineering. A reactor fire breaks out; the player suit-suppresses it — CIG calls this system ship engineering.
- Zero-G EVA. Blown out of the ship, the player uses new push/pull EVA movement with limited oxygen, navigating debris to shelter.
- First piloting. The demo ends with the player taking the Gauntlet's helm personally.
Technology on display
- Cutscenes are ~52% of the prologue, transitioning seamlessly into gameplay with no loading screens or camera cuts — all rendered in-engine.
- Outdoor scenes render hundreds of ships and thousands of debris pieces — the fleet-battle scale covered in our space battle guide.
- StarCloth cloth simulation, refined facial rendering, and the Maelstrom physics-destruction system (work in progress) all appear.
- Ray tracing and global illumination were not yet implemented at the reveal — CIG showed the game without them.
Confirmed systems (official statements, beyond footage)
- Difficulty settings will exist.
- Character customization.
- Branching storylines and decisions that affect reputation and outcomes.
- Specific story missions become replayable in co-op after you complete them solo.
- Campaign length of over 40 hours (developer estimate, December 2025**)**.
Context: it is still pre-release
The live stage version of the demo crashed twice — the official upload is the clean pre-recorded take — and creators who played five-hour sessions in October 2026 described a build that "feels finished" but visibly unpolished. Treat all footage as pre-release: final optimization, including ray tracing, is still ahead. See the delay history for where the Q2 2027 window stands.
All segments described above are visible in the official reveal video, cross-checked against the community wiki's detailed writeup, 2026-10-12.
